Maxtrax All-Terrain Recovery Shovel, 2026 Good Design Award Winner

When you're bogged, the first thing you reach for is a shovel. That's why we built the All-Terrain Recovery Shovel to live on your Maxtrax boards, not rattle around in the back of the car. Turns out the judges liked that idea too.

MAXTRAX All-Terrain Recovery Shovel has been recognised in the 2026 Australian Good Design Awards, Australia’s longest-running international design awards, for excellence in design, innovation and impact.

The award

The shovel was named a 2026 Australian Good Design Award Winner in the Product Design Sport and Lifestyle category. Every project in the Awards is evaluated by an independent Jury of more than 100 Australian and international design experts against three core criteria: Good Design, Design Innovation and Design Impact.

This year’s Awards were presented under the theme Design that Leads, with the winners celebrated at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney on Friday 9 October.

From the jury

“The Jury recognises the MAXTRAX All-Terrain Recovery Shovel for its world-first integration with existing MAXTRAX recovery boards, eliminating the need for independent roof rack mounting while delivering a modular, dual-handle system that adapts to diverse recovery scenarios. The design was commended for being well-resolved and appropriate for its market, with seamless integration that strengthens the overall recovery platform package through clever mounting brackets and a contoured blade profile. The Jury was impressed by how the solution encourages responsible 'tread lightly' philosophy by clustering essential tools together, whilst the striking automotive aesthetics visually complement premium 4x4 vehicles. The design team is congratulated on delivering a purposeful recovery tool that enhances both safety and accessibility during high-stress vehicle extractions.”

Why it lives on your boards

The shovel mounts straight onto your MKII or XTREME boards with the included brackets and straps, and the included cable lock keeps it there. Your boards and shovel go on and off the rack together, so there's no separate mount to find room for.

Two handles, one shovel

Around the tyres and in wheel ruts, the short handle gives you control and leverage to dig quickly. When the sand or mud is built up under the diffs, axles or belly pan, clip on the extension pole and reach in from the side. You clear what's underneath without crawling under a stuck vehicle.

We designed the shovel with Clandestine Design Group, the same team we worked with on the Good Design Award-winning Maxtrax Moto Board.
